Our Story
Mercy Care Ethiopia stands as a profound testament to the power of compassion and global unity. Since our establishment in 1998, we have operated as a non-governmental charity with a singular, unwavering purpose: to bridge the gap in healthcare for the underserved populations of our region. Our journey began through a collaborative spirit that transcended borders, uniting dedicated individuals from the United States and other international partners with a shared vision of transforming the medical landscape in Ethiopia. This collective effort was moved by a desire to ensure that life-saving medical attention was not a luxury, but a fundamental right accessible to all members of our community. The foundational architecture and spiritual heart of our center were meticulously shaped by the foresight of Prof. Badeg Bekele. A visionary leader and a pillar of the Ethiopian medical community, Prof. Badeg provided the essential guidance that translated a dream into a physical reality. His leadership was the catalyst for the construction of our primary medical facility and the recruitment of a premier team of experts who share his values of integrity and excellence. Beyond general medicine, Prof. Badeg championed the establishment of critical specialized units, including advanced dental services and a high-caliber surgical eye clinic. This eye center, in particular, has become a beacon of hope, restoring sight and changing lives for thousands of individuals who previously had no access to ophthalmic surgery. While our identity remains deeply rooted in the Kechene neighborhood of Addis Ababa, our mission has grown in scope and scale. We have strategically expanded our presence to include three additional health posts across the capital, ensuring that our services are within reach of those who need them most. Over the past decades, we have been profoundly humbled to provide essential medical care to more than one million patients, serving families from the heart of the capital to the most remote regions of the country. This milestone reflects our enduring commitment to public health and the deep trust our patients place in us.Our work is carried out by a team of 50 highly skilled health professionals and 35 essential support staff members, all of whom are united by a culture of empathy and clinical rigor. We take immense pride in our contribution to the national health infrastructure, offering key services such as tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment, comprehensive dental surgery, family planning, and robust HIV/AIDS prevention programs. Each of our initiatives is designed to meet, and often exceed, the strict quality and safety standards mandated by the Federal Ministry of Health of Ethiopia.Mercy Care Ethiopia’s holistic approach to well-being also extends beyond the walls of our clinics. In the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region, we have successfully developed four vital water spring projects, recognizing that clean water is the first line of defense against disease. As we look toward the future, we remain inspired by the legacy of Prof. Badeg and the resilience of the people we serve. We are committed to further modernizing our facilities, expanding our specialized care, and continuing to provide a warm, professional environment where every patient is treated with the highest degree of dignity and care for generations to come.
